How To Keep Garage Door Noise To A Minimum

Who doesn’t find the squealing, rumbling roar of the garage door annoying? Is there anything that can be done to reduce or eliminate the disruption it causes to those both inside and outside your home? Thankfully, you do have a number of options.

Your garage door is attached to rollers that travel along a track. In most cases, both the rollers and the track are made of steel. Since, metal on metal makes for a whole lot of noise and vibration, your first line of defense is to ensure regular lubrication. This makes for smoother operation, but will not usually eliminate the problem.

Your next cheapest step is to replace the metal rollers with ones made of nylon. A 10-pack of nylon rollers will only cost you about $60, but can make a big difference in reducing the noise and vibration as the door rolls along its track.
A door made of hollow steel is a losing battle because the door will act like a drum to broadcast noise. Replacing it with an insulated door will help to absorb sound and vibration and will ensure a better seal against noise.

If your automatic door opener runs on a chain drive, consider replacing it with a rubber belt-driven model. Or, choose an opener that runs on DC power. By operating at controlled, slower speeds at the start and end, these openers prevent the door from the grabbing and banging that’s typical of models running on AC power. DC models are so quiet that the door is silent and all you might hear is the soft hum of the motor.

Carriage House Garage Doors - Timeless Elegance Renewed

The pioneers may have led simple lives, but they sure had it right back in the 1800s when they began building solid, quality barn and stable doors. Down to our day, their timeless appeal continues to stand as a mark of taste and elegance among homeowners who are choosing to install carriage house doors on their garages.

These doors mimic the traditional look of old-style wood doors that swung open sideways from structures that housed horse-drawn carriages. But with modern technological advancements, manufacturers can replicate their nostalgic looks with the unmatched strength and durability of insulated steel doors. You get all the beauty of antique wood doors without fear of rot, warping or maintenance.

Whether you have a single or double car garage, there’s a wide selection of styles to transform the whole look and curb appeal of your home. Both doors and inlaid windows can be straight or ached. Panel styles also vary, from traditional box panels to vertical slats for a more contemporary twist. If your taste goes to ultra-nostalgic, try overlaid diagonal braces or timbered cross bucks.

The great thing about carriage house doors is that you can practically customize all the smaller details to suit your exact preferences. Experiment with the various designs in window grilles, strap hinges, and pull handles or latches. Accent with a pair of old-time lanterns on each side of the door and your home will be ready to charm.

Don’t Get Scammed By Sub-Par Garage Door Sales And Servicing

You don’t go shopping for garage doors too often. But when you do, how can you tell if you’re being sold a quality door that will look great and work well for years to come? Or if you need to service minor problems, how can you avoid losing your shirt over inflated service fees? Keep in mind the following tips because they’ll save you time, frustration and money when you next need sales or servicing for your garage door.

Finding A Dealer—Shops abound, but keep in mind that a local dealer is more likely to have a vested interest in getting and keeping your business. Since there’s less for them to travel, being local also means that these dealers should be able to keep service costs to a minimum. But be wary. Unsavoury companies have been known to operate under multiple names in numerous regions, making them appear local when they’re actually not. Visit customer review sites such as www.homestars.com for feedback from customers who have experience with the dealer you’re considering.

Shopping For Doors—Check the specs. Don’t just eyeball a door and make a decision based on cosmetics. Cheap doors with 40 year old technology of polystyrene foam insulation are still being passed off as quality doors due to their super-thick appearance. But thinner doors with polyurethane foam-injected insulation are now the standard, offering much better insulation and durability. Look for a minimum insulation value above R13.

Servicing Fees—An experienced and reputable service company should be able to diagnose your garage door problem right over the phone, and provide a definite estimate for parts and labour. If the dealer charges a flat rate just to come and look at your door only to add extra fees for parts and labour afterwards, look elsewhere to avoid unpleasant surprises and unanticipated expense.

Is It Time To Replace Your Garage Door?

Garage doors can do their duty for years on end. However, at some point in the life of your home, you may need to resign it to the scrap yard. While this is another homeowner’s expense, it can also be a great opportunity to increase your home’s value and curb appeal. There are a wide variety of styles available on the market today, to give your home a fresh new look.

What are the signs that it’s time to go door shopping? Check out the following list.

Single Piece Flip-Out Doors—This is the old style of door that flips open in one piece on a pivot - the annoying, inconvenient kind which requires you to back up any cars parked out front or shovel the snow before you can even think of opening the door. Simply put: if you have this type of door, start budgeting now to replace it. Once the pivot pins give out, the door will simply fall off. The pivot arms are not replaceable, so don’t wait for the door to fall onto your car, or worse yet onto a family member.

'Smiling' Doors—No, your door is not being friendly! Smiling happens when a 16 x 7 one-piece double-car door loses its backbone support. Wood at the sides is held up by metal hinges, but the centre of the door starts to buckle and sag over time, creating a “smiling” contour. Even though your door may look happy, its not...and it's time for a new one!

Rotten Wood—Do you have rot, fungi, mould or mushrooms growing on your doors? If so, then the door is suffering from moisture damage. Once rot reaches the nut, bolts and hinges, the door could be in a dangerous, unstable condition. While sanding and repainting may sound like a solution, moisture-locked wood is often past the point of repair. Consider replacing instead with an insulated steel door with authentic wood grain embossing...and leave growing things to the garden!

If you notice any of these signs, then it’s probably time to go shopping for a new door. For Markham’s top choice in high quality garage doors and servicing, visit Markham Garage Doors at www.markhamgaragedoors.com or call 905-472-9178.
